Most people know their zodiac sign — Taurus, Leo, Scorpio. But in Vedic astrology Jyotish, that sign may be entirely different. And even when the name coincides, its meaning and interpretation differ fundamentally. Lagna is the sign rising on the horizon at the exact moment of your birth. It describes your personality, body, character and life path more precisely than any other indicator in the chart. Without knowing your Lagna, an astrological forecast only works in part. If standard forecasts only half-describe you — the answer most likely lies in the Lagna. On this page we explain what Lagna is, how it differs from the Ascendant in Western astrology, and how to calculate it right now using our online calculator.

Today there are three main traditions: Western (tropical), Vedic (sidereal, Jyotish) and Chinese. The key difference between Western and Vedic astrology lies in the starting point of the Zodiac. That is why Jyotish signs are shifted approximately 23–24 degrees relative to their Western counterparts.

The Zodiac is a belt of 12 signs through which the Sun travels over the course of a year. Each sign reflects a particular energy, set of qualities and archetype. The Sun sign is what most people call 'their sign' — yet in the birth chart it is just one of many indicators.

Lagna is the Vedic name for the Ascendant. Astronomically, they are the same point. But in Jyotish the Lagna occupies the central place in chart analysis — it is the starting point for calculating all houses and reading the personality.

The Ascendant is the sign rising on the horizon at the moment of your birth. It changes approximately every 2 hours, which means that even people born on the same day can have different Ascendants. In Western astrology it complements the Sun sign.
To calculate the Lagna you will need your date, exact time and place of birth. Enter them into the fields of our calculator. The more precise the time, the more accurate the result. Since the Lagna changes roughly every two hours, the birth time is critically important here.
After the calculation you will see your Lagna sign according to Jyotish — one of the 12 signs of the Vedic Zodiac. Remember it: this is where the reading of your chart begins.
The Lagna sign and the Sun sign often do not match — and that is perfectly normal. The Sun sign shows your essence and goals; the Lagna shows your personality, body and way of engaging with the world. Both matter, but the Lagna is the foundation of the chart.
Knowing your Lagna, you can read astrological forecasts correctly — using your Vedic sign rather than your Sun sign alone. For a deeper analysis of your chart, book an individual consultation.
We created this calculator for those who want to understand themselves through a precise instrument of the Vedic tradition. The calculation is based on the Jyotish system with ayanamsha — the correction that determines the real position of the signs in the starry sky at the moment of your birth. This is exactly what distinguishes a Vedic calculation from a Western one, and it produces a result that many people experience for the first time as ‘this is actually me’. All you need is your date, time and place of birth. The calculator does the rest in a matter of seconds. One important detail: the Lagna changes approximately every two hours, so an accurate birth time is essential for an accurate result. If you don’t know it, check with your parents or your birth documents. We at YogaHub believe that knowing your Lagna is not just an astrological fact — it is the moment when a person begins to understand themselves more clearly.

Astronomically, yes — they refer to the same point in the chart. However, in Western and Vedic astrology it is calculated using different systems and interpreted in different ways. In Jyotish, the Lagna holds a central place in chart analysis.
The Lagna shifts approximately every 2 hours, so an exact birth time is essential. Without it, the result will only be approximate. If you don’t know your exact time of birth, check with your parents or look it up in your birth documents.
This comes down to a difference in the starting point of calculation. Western astrology uses the Tropical Zodiac (tied to the seasons), while Vedic astrology uses the Sidereal Zodiac (tied to the actual positions of the stars). The difference is approximately 23–24 degrees, which in most cases shifts the sign one position back.
In Jyotish, the Lagna is considered the most important indicator in the chart. It serves as the foundation from which all houses are derived. The Sun sign is also significant, but it is one of many indicators — not the primary one.
Ayanamsha is a correction that accounts for the shift in the coordinate system caused by the precession of Earth’s axis. It is precisely this correction that allows Jyotish calculations to reflect the true positions of the planets against the starry sky, rather than the conventional positions used in Western astrology.
