What are singing bowls?

Singing bowls are a friction and percussion musical instrument. They are often called Tibetan or Himalayan, and in Japan they are called rin or rei. The instrument is made in the form of a metal bowl with a mallet or a stick, which is used to strike or move the bowl.

In ancient times, bowls were used in Asia in the religious traditions of Buddhism or Bon. Nowadays, they are also used in religion but are also used for meditation, relaxation, and various medical practices.

The effect of singing bowls on the body – what research says

It is known that stress negatively affects not only the psycho-emotional state but also physical health, provoking many diseases: heart attack, stroke, oncology, exacerbation of chronic diseases of internal organs, skin diseases, etc.

Under the influence of stress, addictions appear, and bad habits are formed. Therefore, it is necessary to work on reducing anxiety promptly. Meditators and psychologists recommend using various practices to actively work on your consciousness.

Research has long been carried out on how healing occurs with the help of sound, and the practice of its use dates back thousands of years.

Renowned Professor Mich Noor devoted more than 40 years of his life to research on this topic. He worked in the 70s of the last century. Mich Noor claims that singing bowls as a musical instrument appeared first in Western culture, and only then in Tibet. Its residents began to actively support myths about the bowls to sell them. Then, in the 70s, the professor visited hundreds of monasteries in Tibet but did not encounter this instrument in any of them. Now they are sold in thousands of stores in this region.

There has been a lot of research done on singing bowls and sound vibrations. In this article, we will share, from our point of view, the most significant of them.

What are alpha rhythms?

Alpha rhythm is the rhythm of the brain in the frequency band from 8 to 14 Hz, it is characteristic of those cells that interpret information. They are a characteristic of brain activity in a state of deep calm and relaxation. This state is especially valuable for meditation, as it helps to deepen the practice and achieve a state of internal balance.

Brain activity becomes slow and rhythmic, which helps improve concentration, increase awareness and reduce stress. By opening their eyes, many people move from an alpha wave state to a more active state. According to statistics, people with pronounced alpha rhythms have the following qualities:

  • the ability to think not in concrete objects, but in abstract categories;
  • work with huge amounts of information;
  •  “generate” creative ideas;
  • they have developed intuition;
  • has the makings of a psychic;
  • they find non-standard solutions;
  • are able to concentrate for a long time;
  • know how to cope with stress and anxiety.

Geniuses exhibit elevated alpha rhythms all the time. If a person has low levels, then he is often prone to bad habits and addictive behavior.

In 2010, a study was conducted in the states that showed the relationship of musical bowls on the health of people listening to their sounds. Participants in the experiment first filled out questionnaires in which they indicated:

  • do they have stress;
  • state of anxiety;
  • tension or anger.

There were also questions about the presence of physical pain. Of the 69 participants, 29 noted their presence.

All subjects lay on yoga mats, with their heads towards the bowls, and the meditation master conducted a session using the sounds of singing bowls for an hour. At the end of the session, most participants felt reduced stress, peace and relaxation.

In addition, after participating in the experiment for a week, many noted an improvement in cognitive abilities and information began to be remembered better. Experts noted that such meditation can improve the functioning of the cardiovascular system.

During research, one of the models was asked to close their eyes and remember the music produced by Tibetan bowls. Before this, she showed low alpha activity. After this, pronounced brain activity in the alpha range was recorded.

Why do cups affect the body?

Everything that is in the Universe, and also located on our Earth, creates vibrations. Our body, which consists of 70-80% water, reacts to them. Exposure to electromagnetic radio waves negatively affects the body, causing mental disorders. But “sound massage” can heal a person by neutralizing the effects of external negative vibrations. Sounds have a beneficial effect on the human body and its psyche.

Tibetan bowls also have a calming effect on a person’s mental state, helping to cope with nervousness and stress.

The sounds of Tibetan bowls affect the body at the cellular level. Each healthy cell has a certain rhythm of vibrations, which is disturbed in an unhealthy one. Music can even it out and transmit information to other cells.

Various studies have shown that singing bowls have a positive effect on the human body:

  • normalize blood circulation;
  • strengthen immunity;
  • reduce blood pressure;
  • stimulate brain function;
  • remove negative energy background;
  • relieve depression.

The music produced by singing bowls sometimes works wonders, plunging a person into a hypnotic or yogic sleep. After this, all fears and doubts go away, and lightness and stability remain.

How bowls affect the 7 energy centers – chakras

The bowls vibrate at different frequencies, in different tones and are capable of producing harmonic overtones. This is possible because they are made from metal alloys, which include: copper, gold, silver, tin, nickel, iron, zinc. Each bowl produces sounds of a certain frequency. It determines how high or low a note sounds. The higher the frequency, the higher the note and vice versa.

The sounds produced by the bowls stimulate and harmonize human energy centers. Each frequency is associated with one or another energy center.

It is known that in the human body there are 7 energy centers (chakras), on which his physical, emotional and spiritual well-being depends. Each chakra has a connection with a specific area of the body or affects some aspect of life.

The sounds of Tibetan bowls can harmonize and balance these areas:

  1. Muladhara (root chakra). Located at the base of the spine. The low frequency sounds produced by Tibetan bowls help strengthen her connection to the earth and give a feeling of stability.
  2. Svadhisthana (sacral chakra). Below the belly. Mid-frequency sounds help unlock creativity and a sense of joy.
  3. Manipura (umbilical chakra). High frequency sounds activate willpower and energy, strengthening self-esteem, determination and confidence.
  4. Anahata (heart chakra). Sounds filled with love and compassion develop openness, harmony in relationships and compassion.
  5. Vishuddha (throat chakra). Clean and clear sounds help improve communication, as well as develop the ability to express yourself in understandable and accessible language.
  6. Ajna (third eye). Harmonious sounds help strengthen intuition, and develop imagination and wisdom.
  7. Sahasrara (coronary chakra). Located at the top of the head. Tibetan bowls, emitting high frequencies, contribute to the awakening of spiritual enlightenment and unity with the Universal energy.

Regular practices with the sounds of Tibetan singing bowls balance energy in all human energy centers, awakening an inner sense of harmony and balance.
