Om Namah Shivaya. Hari Om.
Get comfortable — today we’ll dive into the fascinating world of human body energetics and learn how ancient traditions of Vedas, Tantra, Ayurveda, and Chinese Medicine explain the influence of piercing on our wellbeing.
For most people, piercing is a way of self-expression, a tribute to fashion, or simply beauty. But in traditional teachings, the human body is viewed as Yantra — a divine geometric structure through which energy flows. And when we pierce the skin, we’re essentially embedding a metallic conductor directly into our energetic channels. Imagine connecting an antenna to a complex electrical circuit — the result can be most unexpected!
Let’s understand what happens from an energetic perspective.
Energetic Map of the Body
Ayurveda describes 72,000 nadis (energetic channels), while Traditional Chinese Medicine maps out the main meridians. When we pierce certain points, we affect these invisible “highways” of our energetic body.
Nose — Control Center

In Vedic tradition, the nose isn’t just a breathing organ, but a true “switchboard” for brain hemispheres:
The left nostril is connected to Ida-nadi (lunar channel), which governs feminine energy, cooling, and intuition. Interestingly, in Ayurveda, left nostril piercing is traditionally used as a way to support women’s health — it’s believed to activate points connected to the reproductive system and may ease menstrual cramps. The right nostril is connected to Pingala-nadi (solar channel), responsible for logic, heat, and active energy.
Ears — Microsystem of the Entire Body

In Chinese Medicine, the ear is represented as an inverted embryo — each part corresponds to specific organs and systems:
The earlobe contains the “eye point,” and its piercing is traditionally considered beneficial for vision and activation of brain functions. The upper edge of the ear (helix) corresponds to the liver in the Yang system. Here it’s important to understand — if piercing is done exclusively for beauty, without considering energetic features, this may affect concentration.
Navel — City of Jewels

The navel area is the location of Manipura chakra, the center of our willpower and digestive fire (Agni). In tantric tradition, the navel is called Kanda — the root from which all 72,000 nadis spread.
Piercing in this area can affect the circulation of prana (life energy). Some practitioners note that while initially this may stimulate energy, over time possible dispersion may occur, sometimes manifesting in digestive problems or feelings of energetic imbalance.
Eyebrow Area — Territory of the Third Eye

Eyebrows are located in the sacred zone of Ajna chakra. In Chinese Medicine, the bladder meridian passes here. A metallic element across the eyebrow can create certain “energetic noise,” potentially affecting intuitive perception.
Magic of Metals and Stones
Now for the most interesting part — what materials we use for piercing matters enormously!
Gold versus Silver
Gold relates to the Sun — it warms, supports immunity and vital force. Perfect for the nose (especially the right side) or ears when energy needs to be added.
Silver — the metal of the Moon, cooling and quickly conducting energy. Perfect for calming an overly active mind or for the left nostril.
Precious Stones — Frequency Modulators
Each stone creates its unique energetic frequency:
- Diamond (Venus’s stone) in the left nostril is traditionally used to enhance feminine attractiveness;
- Pearl in the earlobe is considered a calming remedy for an anxious mind;
- Ruby — the only stone advised for navel piercing (if it already exists), as it resonates with solar energy;
- Amethyst in the eyebrow area can help transform energy into intuitive clarity.
Sacred Tradition: Rings of Kanphata Yogis

Have you ever seen images of yogis with large rings in their ears? These are kanphata yogis from the lineage of great Gorakhnath, and their ornaments aren’t decoration, but spiritual technology!
The guru makes a special cut in a specific point of ear cartilage connected to kundalini-shakti. Heavy rings (made of horn, glass, or copper) create constant pressure that:
- Sublimates sexual energy, directing it upward to the brain.
- Helps hear Anahata Nada — the inner sound of the Universe.
- Directs consciousness inward, dulling perception of the external world.
This is a very serious practice requiring years of preparation — it shouldn’t be perceived as ordinary piercing!
Art of Timing

In Vedic tradition, timing is of enormous importance. If you decide to insert jewelry with a precious stone, it’s better to do it on the day of the planet governing that stone:
- Sunday (Sun) — for ruby;
- Monday (Moon) — for pearl;
- Wednesday (Mercury) — for emerald;
- Thursday (Jupiter) — for yellow sapphire (by the way, the best day for ear piercing!);
- Friday (Venus) — for diamond.
Important: avoid piercing on Tuesday (Mars day) and Saturday (Saturn day) — these planets govern surgical interventions and may slow healing.
Perfect timing — waxing Moon (Shukla Paksha) in the morning, after sunrise.
Stone Activation Ritual
Before first inserting jewelry with a precious stone:
- cleanse in milk, then in pure water (ideally — from Ganges or spring water);
- repeat the planet’s mantra 108 times (or minimum 9), holding the jewelry in the right hand;
- insert while visualizing white light.
Complete List of Activation Mantras:
- Sun: Om Hram Hrim Hraum Sah Suryaya Namaha.
- Moon: Om Shram Shrim Shraum Sah Chandraya Namaha.
- Mars: Om Kram Krim Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namaha.
- Mercury: Om Bram Brim Braum Sah Buddhaya Namaha.
- Jupiter: Om Gram Grim Graum Sah Gurave Namaha.
- Venus: Om Dram Drim Draum Sah Shukraya Namaha.
- Saturn: Om Pram Prim Praum Sah Shanaye Namaha.
Special Cases: Tongue and Facial Piercings
Tongue Piercing — Delicate Territory
The tongue in Ayurveda is a reflection of the state of all internal organs, and its central line is critically important:
From Ayurveda’s perspective: The tongue is closely connected to digestive fire (Agni). Here is located Bodhaka Kapha — a subdosha responsible for recognizing taste and triggering digestion. Metal in the center can disrupt the natural flow of saliva and prana, potentially weakening digestion and introducing Vata-dosha imbalance (dryness) in an area that should be moist and warm.
From TCM perspective: The central line corresponds to Ren-Mai channel (Conception Vessel), governing all feminine energy of the body. Piercing can create energetic instability and in the long term affect Jing (vital essence) — the body’s basic energy on which our vitality and longevity depend.
From Tantra perspective: The tongue is an instrument for creating mantras and the dwelling place of Saraswati, goddess of speech. Metal can distort sound vibrations of mantras and affect Vak-siddhi — the power of spoken words. Additionally, piercing blocks the possibility of performing Khechari mudra — an advanced practice where the tongue is curled into the nasopharynx to achieve special states of consciousness.
Facial Piercings — Energetic Gateways

Nasal septum — the meeting place of Ida and Pingala nadis. Here also passes Du-mai (Governing Vessel), responsible for all Yang energy of the body. Metal in this zone can create imbalance between cooling and warming flows, sometimes affecting pranayama practices, causing headaches or sleep disturbances due to “overload” of Yang energy in the head area. Lips in Chinese Medicine are connected to spleen and stomach — organs governing the earth element and our ability to “digest” both food and life experience:
The center of the lower lip is on the trajectory of the front midline meridian (Ren-Mai). Piercing here can affect digestion and the ability for healthy contemplation (spleen in TCM is responsible for “digesting thoughts”);
Corners of the mouth — places of intersection of many meridians, including Triple Heater. These points reflect our emotional state, and their stimulation with metal can affect liver and gallbladder functions — organs connected to emotion management.
Wise Recommendations
If you already have piercing and notice decreased energy or other changes, try replacing ordinary metal with gold (for stabilization) or use amber, wood, bone — these materials create less electromagnetic interference.
Conscious Choice:
- for health and balance — earlobes or left nostril;
- if interested in spiritual development — study the kanphata tradition, but remember the seriousness of this path;
- with navel or eyebrow piercing — carefully monitor your energetic state.
Remember: your body is an amazing temple where divine energy dwells. Any changes should be made consciously, understanding their possible influence on your energetic field.
