Introduction
Have you ever noticed that one day everything annoys you — then the next day the exact same situation doesn’t bother you at all? Or that anxiety shows up out of nowhere — no trigger, no obvious reason?
It’s not random, and it’s not “just your personality.” It’s the state of your Five Elements.
I’ve been practicing Qigong for many years, and I keep seeing the same thing: every emotional state has a very specific physical “address” in the body. Anger lives in the liver. Fear — in the kidneys. Anxiety — in the stomach. And you can work with each of them through simple movement and breath.
I’ve written in detail about how the Five Elements system works — its relationships and cycles — in this article →
But this is different. Five concrete Qigong practices. One exercise (and one video) for each element. Take them and do them right now.
Earth — stomach, spleen, confidence
Organs: stomach and spleen. Emotion: anxiety, panic, lack of self-confidence.
Earth is the center — the foundation everything else depends on. I always start here, and I recommend the same to my students.
When Earth is out of balance, you feel it. Anxiety for no reason. “I can’t make myself start.” Digestion goes off. Decisions become hard. In Chinese tradition, the spleen is literally our inner strength and our capacity to intend and act. When it’s weak, we stall.
Here’s the good news: you can do this exercise on its own, separate from the rest. Stand up, do it — and feel your energy come back. Tested on myself.
When to do it: anxiety, can’t start a task, panic, feeling unstable.
Metal — lungs, large intestine, inner strength
Organs: lungs and large intestine. Emotion: sluggishness, heaviness, low energy, sadness.
Metal is firmness and clarity — the ability to stay yourself when life presses in. When Metal is depleted, everything turns gray. You don’t feel like doing anything, your mind is foggy, and your mood drops day after day.
The lungs are the organ of Metal. And that’s not accidental: every time you truly open the chest and take a full breath, you’re already working with this element. Breath is Metal.
One nuance I always give my students: practice Metal after Earth. In the logic of the system, Metal is “mined” from Earth. And during practice, visualize the color white — it’s associated with lung energy.
When to do it: after illness, after antibiotics, during sadness and low spirits, when “everything feels gray.”
Water — kidneys, bladder, fearlessness
Organs: kidneys and bladder. Emotion: fear, phobias, anxiousness.
Water is soft, flowing, yin energy. In the body it works like a delivery service, bringing nourishment to every organ. When Water is low, the whole system starts to glitch.
But what I really want to say about Water is this: it’s about fear. Is there something that’s stopping you —business, relationships, personal growth? A phobia you’ve carried for years? Work with the Water element for a few weeks. I’ve seen it change people. Fear is not “your character.” It’s the state of the kidneys.
In the practice, it’s important to feel resistance or tingling between the palms — this is a sign the energy is activated and working.
When to do it: fears, phobias, the feeling that “something is holding me back,” kidney issues.
Wood — liver, gallbladder, calmness
Organs: liver and gallbladder. Emotion: anger, irritation, destabilization.
Wood is growth and roots at the same time — going deep while reaching up. When this element is balanced, you’re stable and you grow. When it’s not, even small things can throw you off.
I do this exercise every time something pulls me out of balance. I step aside, “spin the mill,” do the practice —and come back calm. It works every single time.
The link is direct and uncompromising: anger — liver. Not a metaphor; physiology. Chronic anger means chronic load on the body’s main blood filter. And water quality matters too: soda, additives, “bad” water can suppress the liver directly.
When to do it: when someone or something has triggered you, when you’re irritated, when you can’t accept a situation.
Fire — heart, circulatory system, joy
Organs: heart and circulatory system. Emotion: joy, passion — and their absence.
Fire is the final element in the system: the brightest, and the one that demands the most care. Too much Fire can “burn” Water, overload the heart, and create anxiety. Too little Fire — and joy disappears. Your passion for life fades.
Before working with Fire, activate Water first. Simply rub the kidney area a few times with the backs of your hands. This cools the system and protects against overheating.
One more thing I consider crucial: after any Qigong series, you can’t just stand up and rush into your day. You need to “close” the energy channels — like putting out a campfire instead of leaving it smoldering. In the video, I show how to do this.
When to do it: heart issues, blood pressure swings, lack of joy and passion, heaviness in the legs, swelling.
How to use these practices in real life
You don’t need to do all five every day. That’s the beauty of the Wu Xing system — it’s targeted.
Feel anxious — do Earth. Everything feels gray — Metal. Something is holding you back — Water. You’ve been triggered — Wood. Heart feels off or joy is missing — Fire.
Each exercise takes 5–10 minutes. Stand up, do it, feel the difference. No special conditions — just you and a bit of attention to your body.
The only thing I ask for is consistency. Once is an interesting experience. A few weeks in a row — that’s real change.
Conclusion
The Five Elements aren’t abstract theory. They’re a working map of your body and your emotions — and each of us has our own pattern.
Earth brings stability. Metal — inner strength. Water — fearlessness. Wood — calm. Fire — joy.
When all five are balanced, the body functions well, emotions are steady, and life flows. When one goes out of balance, a chain reaction starts. The good news: you can stop it — right now — with simple movements and five minutes of mindful attention.
Start with Earth. Feel your foundation. And move forward — from there — at your own pace.
